Vote to reunite our union!
This week ballot papers are being sent out for the election of the new Unite Executive Council (EC). The importance of this election for the future of our union cannot be overstated.
Together with the election for the General Secretary - which will follow quickly on the heels of the EC election - the future of our union for the following years will be defined.
Reunite is urging all members to vote for candidates from the Members United slate together with a number of other Industrial Independent candidates.
The EC is the governing body of our union and it is responsible for oversight, direction and accountability. As evidenced by rulings of the Certification Officer and the need of a majority of the outgoing EC to take legal action in the last period, Sharon Graham and her supporters have no respect whatsoever for the EC and the rule book.
They believe the EC is at best a body to be ignored, circumvented, or bludgeoned into submission, and at worst - as one of her EC supporters said in official meetings - believe it should be abolished altogether so that Sharon Graham can rule as an elected dictator with no restraints.
There are serious questions about the state of our finances. Staff and officer morale is at rock bottom - as seen in the current officers' ballot for industrial action. Our union is directionless and isolated in the wider movement.
It is absolutely essential that we return an EC that will stabilise our union and work to prevent more wrongdoing. This wont be done by electing a slate of candidates whose first priority is blind loyalty to their Dear Leader.
Never has our union been so divided and dysfunctional as it is now, but this election gives us the chance to push the reset and get a fresh start.
Our members will face massive challenges in the coming months and years. We need our union to be united and in great shape to face those challenges.
It's time to pull together and reunite.
Time to end the wrong doing and start respecting lay member control.
Time for a fresh start and a new beginning.
