2026 is the year we Reunite our union
As we begin the most important year since Unite was founded, Reunite wishes a happy new year to everyone across our union and our movement.
Our future will be decided in 2026. The election of our Executive Council will reaffirm the member-led democracy of our union. The election of our next General Secretary will set our path as a fighting union, which organises to win industrially and politically.
Our growing movement to reunite our union will end the toxicity and division. We will end the chaos, the industrial negligence and the political vacuum of the current leadership. We will turn the page, ending the ‘elected dictatorship’ of the Sharon Graham era.
We must reunite to win our industrial battles – end the devastating site closures, win a genuine transition for industries on the brink, confront attacks on our pay and jobs, and give reps the backup they need to win at the bargaining table in the toughest conditions.
We must reunite to answer the political crisis of our time. First, the continued rise of Reform and the far-right must be challenged. Unite is in a unique position and has a unique responsibility to lead this fight. That is our duty to the thousands of our members targeted by the far right and the thousands more whose jobs will be at risk if Reform take power. That is a disaster we can only prevent together.
We also face the prospect of a change of Prime Minister. If Keir Starmer is forced to resign then Unite must use its influence and leverage positively. This is not the political parlour games of opposition. This is not just about which individual becomes the Prime Minister. It is about asserting the priorities of our members at the centre of political power. It is about defending many thousands of jobs. It is about shaping the future of our country, knowing that every Labour failure is only a blessing for Reform. Our members must have their say. We do not hand out blank cheques. We make demands and force politicians to act on them.
In 2026 we have a union to defend, a future to shape and a world to win.
We are part of a growing movement from every corner of our union. We have every reason to face this year with hope, optimism and a belief in our collective strength to realise the potential of our great union. If we stand together there is nothing we cannot accomplish.
It’s time to Reunite.
